History of Medical Marijuana in Oregon
Cannabis in Oregon is related to a number of legal and cultural events surrounding use of cannabis like marijuana, hashish, THC, kief, etc. Oregon was the first state to legalize the possession of small amounts of cannabis in U.S and among the first to have authorization to use it for medical purposes. In the year 1997, an attempt to recriminalize possession of small amounts of cannabis was turned down by Oregon voters.
The ratio of Oregonians using cannabis outpaced the general United States population by 32–45% from the year 1999 to 2005. One and two years after legalization, according to surveys conducted, 2% of respondents said they did not use marijuana or cannabis in 1974 and 1975 because it was unavailable, 4% for legal or law enforcement reasons, 53% due to lack of interest, and 23% for health dangers, and the remaining 19% reported one-time use.
The Measure 91, approved in 2014, is the ballot measure in the state of Oregon that legalized non-medical cultivation and uses of marijuana. It followed unsuccessful efforts in 1986 and 2012 to legalize marijuana by ballot initiative.
